Dr. Joe W. Hightower Day



Little did Joe Hightower know when he went to church on Sunday, February 18, that John Hunter would read a proclamation stating that February 18, 2007, had been declared Dr. Joe W. Hightower Day in Houston by Mayor Bill White. The proclamation was also read at the HRDF annual meeting, both at the trustees' and advisors/friends' sessions. Everyone was pleased to celebrate Joe. Below is the text of the proclamation.

Dr. Joe W. Hightower Day
*
From 1967 to 2002, Dr. Joe W. Hightower was a professor of chemical engineering at Rice University. Now a professor emeritus, he still teaches some classes. In 1968, Dr. Joe W. Hightower was one of a group of people from Bering Drive Church of Christ who founded the Human Resources Development Foundation (HRDF).

HRDF operates the Hospitality Apartments that provides free housing and emotional support for out-of-town patients at the Texas Medical Center and their caregivers. Dr. Joe W. Hightower has served as president of that foundation since its beginning. Over the past 38 years, the Hospitality Apartments has grown from one apartment to a 42-apartment complex. Construction of a new 46-apartment complex is now underway. Dr. Joe W. Hightower has directed this expansion and is a principal fundraiser for capital grants from foundations, corporations, and area churches.

In addition to his work at the Hospitality Apartments, Dr. Joe W. Hightower continues his involvement at Bering Drive Church of Christ where he sings in the church chorus. He has also been the church blood drive coordinator and has received a "nine gallon cup" for his donations. He also served as president of his neighborhood civic association.

The City of Houston salutes and commends Dr. Joe W. Hightower for his outstanding contributions to the Houston community, and extends best wishes for continued success.

Therefore, I, Bill White, Mayor of the City of Houston, hereby proclaim February 18, 2007, as Dr. Joe W. Hightower Day in Houston, Texas.
